Koidupan waste centre emits foul odour
Rubbish piled up like a “little hill” at this Penampang bin centre as there are no communal bins for the facility.
The District Council will keep tabs on the cleanliness of a bin centre in Koidupan, following a complaint from a Luyang resident that the facility was being poorly maintained.

The resident was under the impression that the centre was not being washed properly due to foul odour about the place.

He also noticed that the bagged waste was piled up “like a small hill” inside the building as there were no communal bins inside.

A Council spokesman said the agency was arranging to buy communal bins for the centre to ensure that the rubbish could be more easily removed.

“We plan to get three such bins. This should provide the users from the surrounding commercial centre with enough space to dispose of their waste,” he said.

He said the agency hoped to have these receptacles placed at the centre by the end of the month.

“We have been aware for some time that there were no bins here but a lack of funds prevented us from acting any earlier to address this problem.”

When asked about what had happened to the bins which were originally placed at the centre when it was first built, he declined to comment.

“The rubbish inside the building is cleared once daily, per the schedule where commercial properties are involved.”

WINSTON of Luyang got a look at the centre by chance when he went to a car accessory shop in this part of Penampang.

“While I was driving past the centre, my three-year-old daughter just happened to throw her water bottle out of the car window,” he said.

“I was forced to stop and look for the bottle which had rolled in the direction of the building.”

He said he was taken aback by the state of the centre, which he said reflected badly on the district.

“I can only wonder what first-time visitors to Koidupan will think, if they happened to catch sight of the centre,” he said.

A Council spokesman said eatery-operators in the area had been asked to drain the fluids from their kitchen waste prior to bagging their rubbish and disposing of it at the centre.

“This will go a long way to minimising the stench coming from the building,” he said.

“We will also look into having the centre hosed down regularly to try and further reduce this nuisance.”
