Single mum gets jail, fine for prostitution

Kota Kinabalu: A single mother who charged RM300 for sex, was sentenced to one month jail and fined RM1,000 or two months jail on Tuesday.

Rosyati Abd Rashid, 33, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to soliciting for prostitution at 3.25pm on May 17 this year in a premises at Warisan Square Plaza, Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens here.

The court ordered Rosyati to serve the jail term from Tuesday.

Earlier, the prosecution informed the court that a police team went to the said premises following tip-off on vice activity there.

A woman, later identified as Rosyati was detained after she was found in a room together with a male customer.

Investigations revealed that during the raid, only Rosyati and the man were inside the premises.

The man confessed that Rosyati offered sex service through the WeChat media application and that Rosyati charged him RM300 for the service.

Requesting for a lenient sentence, Rosyati, who was not represented, informed the court that she was a single mother of one child and that she came from Sandakan to look for a job here.

Inspector Zamri Zakaria, prosecuting, applied for an adequate sentence as a lesson to Rosyati and to other would be-offenders not to commit similar offence.

Rosyati had committed an offence under Section 372B of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine or both on conviction.

In another court, a man was jailed three months for having stolen items.

Azman Bilun admitted before Magistrate Afiq Agoes to having a grinder and one roll of wire which were stolen from one Rasmat Mulsad.

He had committed the offence at 12noon on Aug 4 under a tree at the compound of a house at Kg Ketiau in Putatan.

The court ordered Azman to serve the jail term from Tuesday and ordered Azman be placed under police supervision for two years thereafter.

Azman was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both on conviction.

Meanwhile, 12 people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

Mohd Azidi Abd Rashid was jailed 10 months for having 0.16gm of syabu.

Azidi pleaded guilty to having the drugs at 12.05pm on June 26 in a house at Taman Kuala Manggatal.

He was charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both on conviction.

The other 11 were Md Shahfyie Jakalia, Rudy Ramlee, Nik Mohd Rahimin, Antanom Seit, Michael Mojilli, Benhar Abdul, Omar Kiram, Marconi Abug, Andi Maulana, Erwan Naim and Ibrahim Aliyasir, who admitted separately to taking syabu and Amphetamine.

They had committed the offence at different locations here and in Penampang between June 19 and June 30.

Shahfyie, Rudy and Nik were each fined RM1,700 or seven months jail while the rest were handed seven months jail.

Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.
