Ex-headmaster called to enter defence over false claim

Kota Kinabalu: A former primary school headmaster in Kinabatangan, was called to enter his defence on a charge of making false claim to the State Zakat Centre.Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar made the order against Majahil Majingkil, 56, after ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Majahil, on Wednesday.ADVERTISEMENT
The court set September 28-29 and October 26-29 for Majahil’s defence.
Majahil is accused of submitting the false document over Israk Mikraj programme between July and October 2015, at the State Zakat centre in Muis (Majlis Ugama Islam) here.
The charge stated that Majahil allegedly submitted an undated paperwork of Israk Mikraj programme celebration with the intention of deceiving the officer and make him believe that the programme was conducted on July 16, 2014 at the school in Kinabatangan when it actually was never held.
The offence under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) 2009 and punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act carries a jail term of up to 20 years, and fine of five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher, on conviction.ADVERTISEMENT
About 26 witnesses were called to testify during the prosecution stage.
Prosecuting Officer Mohd Faliq Basiruddin from the MACC conducted for the prosecution while Majahil was represented by counsel Nabila Norsaha, who stood in for counsel Datu Baginda Datu Laja.

The defence will call about five witnesses during the defence.
The court ordered Majahil’s bail to be extended.
