Beirut blast: Wake-up call on ammonium nitrate storage
Based on reports, the devastating explosion in Beirut had the equivalent of 200 - 500 tonnes of trinitrotoluene or TNT.
Kota Kinabalu: The recent Beirut explosion should serve as a wake-up call for the safe storage of ammonium nitrate, said a Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) expert.

Prof Dr Marcus Jopony said the potential of a similar incident to occur in the future is high if the storage and usage of high quantities of ammonium nitrate (AN) are not properly controlled. “The horrific explosion in Beirut, Lebanon on Aug 5, 2020 captures the attention and concern of many. Thanks to mainstream media and social media platforms, the devastation in Beirut was quickly shared across the globe, some of which are real-time information,” said Marcus in a statement.
