Overflowing M’ggatal manhole attended to
This Manggatal manhole had been overflowing for more than two weeks.
THE developer of some Manggatal flats has attended to a manhole servicing the property which has been overflowing since the beginning of October.

A spokesman for the firm said this was done shortly after the management became aware of the problem.

“We engaged a private technician to check on the condition of the pipes leading to the structure,” he said.

“His labourers removed the blockages from inside the sewer line and no effluent has been escaping from the manhole since this was done.”

He urged flat dwellers to contact the company directly about any irregularities involving sewerage for the property so that action can be taken to attend to these matters as soon as possible.

“Maintenance is carried out on this facility as and when it becomes necessary to do so,” he said.

SAM, who occupies a ground floor unit, said he was intermittently without the use of the toilets in his flat for more than a fortnight.

“The water in the bowl does not recede when the flush is pulled,” he said.

He said he noticed the effluent overflowing from the manhole on the housing road near his block.

“I have been forced to keep the doors and windows closer to the road closed to prevent the stench from coming indoors.

On top of this, the foul-smelling liquid also soiled the tyres of vehicles of those driving back to the flats.

“I am so fed up of having to wash my tyres to get rid of the stink.

“I suspect that the structure is blocked as it has not been cleared for some time.”

Sam said he reported this problem to the developer on and off over the past two weeks.

“The firm’s staff recently told me that my grievance had been forwarded to City Hall since the manhole was located on a public road.

“For whatever reason, however, the agency has turned a blind eye to this problem.” The flat dweller provided Hotline with the location of the manhole which was initially forwarded to City Hall.

A City Hall spokesman said the agency had yet to assume responsibility for the manhole even though it was outside the perimeter fence for the flats.

He said a check of its records revealed that the structure, including the sewer pipes underneath, was still under the developer.

“Either the developer or the management company (MC) has to shoulder the cost for clearing and repairing the sewer line servicing these buildings,” he said.

He said the most the agency could do was to pass on the details to one of its contractors, should the developer or MC seek the agency’s help on how to go about tackling the sewerage woe.
