‘Cables with sparks’ footage is an old one

SABAH Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) has refuted claims that several parts of the power transmission cables at Jalan Penempatan, Bukit Padang, caught fire during prolonged heavy rain on Oct 5.A short video clip showing loud and bright sparks on the cables concerned was circulated on WhatsApp on that day, which prompted a concerned member of the public to raise up the issue to Hotline. A SESB spokeswoman, when contacted recently, said its staff at the technical section were immediately deployed to the site upon receiving the report from Hotline. “Nothing was amiss with the cables in question at that time,” she said, blaming some irresponsible individuals for reposting a clip of the video in question, which happened at the site concerned on Sept 27, on social media platforms. She said the incident was reported to their attention at that time and was attended to within an hour. “We hope members of the public will not revive and post old incidents on social media as that will only mislead many people,” she added. LEE, who brought up the matter to Hotline, said he received the video clip from a friend who urged him to highlight it to the relevant authority. “I live not too far from that area but I couldn’t see it from where I am,” he said, hoping SESB would dispatch personnel to the site as soon as possible. He believed there was a short circuit that caused a heat build-up at the nearby substation.
