Lights on KK main roads restored
After the short circuit was dealt with, the lights on Jalan Coastal Highway were restored.
CITY Hall will ensure that the main roads leading into and out of the State Capital are properly lit.

A spokesman for the agency said the contractors had been asked to step up their surveillance of Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens and Jalan Coastal Highway.

This follows a Manggatal motorist’s observations about the lack of illumination along lengthy sections of these stretches at night.

He provided Hotline with the location of the inoperative streetlights. This information was forwarded to City Hall.

The spokesman said a check revealed that technical problems were to blame for the breakdown of these facilities.

“A mechanism inside the control panel, for the lights on Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, was found to have been damaged,” he said.

“Whereas the system for the lights on Jalan Coastal was rendered inert due to a short circuit.”

He said the necessary repairs as soon as these irregularities came to light and these facilities had since been restored.

“The contractors maintaining the lights at these locations have been asked to check on the condition of facilities more frequently.

“We also hope the public will inform us of any irregularities involving these facilities so that action can be taken to deal with these problems as soon as possible.”

ED of Manggatal voiced his displeasure about the lack of illumination between the roundabout near Jesselton Point and the traffic lights leading to the Peak Condominium, off Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens.

He said the streetlights on either side of this section of the stretch were out of order when he went to the State Capital on a recent weekday night.

“Motorists risk colliding with the vehicle ahead of them in the darkness, especially during a downpour,” he said.

Later, when he exited the city along Jalan Coastal Highway, he was shocked to find that the lights on the divider between Centre Point Sabah and the flyover at Wawasan Plaza were also inoperative.

Ed hoped City Hall would act to ensure that the lights were operational before anything unpleasant happened to motorists or pedestrians using this stretch.

He said motorists found it difficult to gauge the movement of pedestrians trying to cross the road because of the lack of illumination on the stretch.

“It is important that both stretches are kept properly lit at night as they serve as with the main entry and exit points for motorists travelling to and from Kota Kinabalu.”

Meanwhile, damage to the streetlights along a housing road for a Luyang neighbourhood rendered these facilities out of order for some time.

The spokesman said the bulbs for several of these facilities were found to have “blown” during an inspection of the stretch.

“The contractor, tasked with looking after the lights, replaced the damaged components shortly thereafter,” he said.

“A sky-master was deployed to the area to facilitate efforts to install the new bulbs.

“The individual was asked to keep an eye on the housing road from time to time so that these streetlight woes did not recur.”

RAYMA, who lives in Luyang Phase 5, said some of the lights on the roadside had been out of operation several weeks.

She was at a loss to understand how the agency could have turned a blind eye to this problem along Luyang Kijang 8.

“There have been several break-ins in the neighbourhood,” she said. “I fear that the unscrupulous parties are taking advantage of the lack of illumination along the road to carry out these misdeeds.”
