Wage subsidy programme now for all
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has announced that the wage subsidy programme will now be extended to all sectors.

The initiative under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) will involve an additional allocation of RM1 billion and is expected to benefit 250,000 employers and 2.6 million workers.

“For a period of one month, eligible employers will receive a wage subsidy of RM600 for each employee earning less than RM4,000.

“In addition, the wage subsidy limit of 200 employees per employer will be increased to 500 employees,” said Muhyiddin in a televised national address on the Permai aid package.

He also announced that some RM24 million will be allocated to fund delivery riders’ full contributions under Socso’s self-employment social security scheme.

He added that the Prihatin special grant will be extended to over 500,000 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in states under the movement control order (MCO), with a payment of RM1,000 each.

Meanwhile, SMEs in other states stand to receive RM500 each. The expansion of the special grant will involve an additional RM650 million of funds.

“Should a state be declared a red zone with MCO imposed, the government will assist by immediately channelling additional assistance to SMEs in that state.”

Some 14,000 tour guides and 118,000 taxi, school bus, tour bus, e-hailing and rental vehicle drivers are set to receive a one-off financial aid of RM500. An additional RM66 million has been allocated for this.

A special 10% discount on electricity bills will be given from January to March to six business sectors, namely hotel operators, theme parks, convention centres, shopping malls, local airline offices and travel/tour agencies.

Meanwhile, the special tax relief up to RM2,500 for the purchase of mobile phones, computers and tablets has been extended to the end of this year.

Muhyiddin also announced that the free 1GB of internet access provided by telecommunications companies will be extended to the end of April.

The special subscription package for students sitting for their SPM and STPM exams has also been extended to students in higher learning institutions until the end of April.
