Kuala Lumpur: Around 110,000 taxi drivers, rental car drivers, school bus drivers, tour bus drivers and e-hailing drivers will benefit from the one-off financial assistance of RM500 under the Perlindungan Ekonomi dan Rakyat Malaysia (Permai) assistance package.

Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, announcing this today, said the assistance involves an allocation of RM55 million. The first payment was disbursed to 20,000 taxi and rental car drivers today, while 15,000 more will receive the cash aid by March 15. A total of 75,000 school bus, tour bus and e-hailing drivers will receive their aid in stages from Feb 26.

“The government hopes this will assist the respective groups, while the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme is being implemented.

“The immunisation programme symbolises the starting point for the recovery of the tourism sector and other sectors affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said in a statement today.

Last month, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the RM15 billion Permai assistance package, which would see 22 initiatives implemented with the aim of combating the Covid-19 pandemic, safeguarding the welfare of the people as well as supporting business continuity.
