Safety fears over tilting utility pole in Inanam

A MOTORIST has voiced his concern about a tilting utility pole which is likely to fall onto passing vehicles near a roundabout at Jalan Kiansom, in Inanam.The motorist who frequents the stretch told Hotline recently that the pole, which was likely to have been hit by a car not too long ago, was only secured with ropes to prevent it from falling onto the road.

“It’s really scary to stop by at the road junction, knowing that the pole is leaning towards my car,” said TAN, the complainant.
He said motorists from Taipan Commercial Centre must stop at the area concerned before proceeding towards the roundabout.
“Those who are familiar with the traffic congestion in that part of the town are very much aware of the sluggish traffic flow along the main road during the evening peak hours.
“What if the ropes suddenly snap while the traffic flow is busy?” he asked, doubting that the caretaker of the utility pole will compensate the car owner for the damage caused to his or her car.

Apart from that, he said pedestrians may get seriously injured or die if they are hit by the pole as well.
“This problem must not be taken lightly by the relevant utility firm in view of the increasing number of people in town ever since the Government lifted the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Kota Kinabalu recently,” he added.

He also pointed out that the present windy and unpredictable weather condition would aggravate the situation.
“For all we know, the occasional strong gust of wind will loosen the tight rope knots and cause it to collapse,” he added.
He hoped its caretaker would carry out a permanent solution to the problem by replacing the damaged pole or fortifying its base as soon as possible.
A TM spokesman, when contacted recently, assured that its staff at the technical section would be asked to verify the complaint promptly.
