S’wak records highest number of new cases

KUCHING: Sarawak Sunday saw the highest number of new daily Covid-19 cases ever recorded in the State with 426 positive cases.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the addition of new cases today brought the cumulative number of positive cases in the state to 13,820 cases.

He said of the new cases Sunday, 203 were in the Serian division with 191 cases detected from the closure and inspection operations carried out at the Semuja Immigration Detention Depot.

“Until a total of 462 detainees have been quarantined and screened at the depot, and of which 433 people were found to be positive,” he said at a press conference, here, Sunday.

Sarawak recorded its highest number of new daily Covid-19 cases on March 19 with 407 cases. Meanwhile, he said that there were two new deaths Sunday, bringing the total number of deaths due to Covid-19 infection in Sarawak to 103 people.

Uggah said that the 102nd death case involved a 77-year-old local man who was admitted to the Sibu Hospital due to coughing symptoms and breathing difficulties.

“He was later tested positive on March 2 and was pronounced dead on March 27.

“The 103rd death case involved a 63-year-old local man who was admitted to the Sibu Hospital due to coughing and breathing problems. “A screening test was conducted and the man was detected to be positive on March 19. The man’s condition deteriorated and he died on March 27,” he added.
