SANDAKAN: A briefing on Nestle’s new RELeaf Project was held at the Sabah Forestry Department’s headquarters, here, by the RELeaf Project Team led by the Head of Agricultural Services, Nestle Malaysia Yong Lee Keng. It was attended by representatives from the EU REDDplus Project partners such as Sawit Kinabalu, IOI and Kwantas and Chief Conservator of Forests, Frederick Kugan. The new project called ‘RELeaf Project (2021-2023)’ was launched on Sept 21, 2020 in collaboration with KeTSA on the Program Penghijauan Malaysia through the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign. This nationwide project which is fully funded by Nestle Headquarters in Switzerland intends to re-forest wildlife corridors to connect fragmented forests, restore riparian zones and degraded forest to protect critical waterways and enhance forest cover; and respect local communities through capacity building and continuous value-creating engagements.

It will no longer be restricted to the riparian reserve areas and funding in the form of tree seedlings and a small workforce will be available for interested parties if requested. RELeaf is now willing to reforest riparian, HCV areas and wildlife corridor areas within the MSPO/RSPO certified plantations areas.

Nestle’s tagline Good Food, Good Life aims to plant three million trees over three years in Malaysia from the year 2021 until 2023 whereby two million trees are allocated for Sabah and Sarawak. Project RELeaf is an evolution from the previous Project RILeaf (2011–2020) by Nestle Malaysia which planted one million trees within the Kinabatangan Wetlands covering an area of 2,703 hectares. Project RELeaf’s partners amongst others included the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resource (KeTSA), Sabah Forestry Department, Sime Darby Plantation, Malaysia Nature Society (MNS) and Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Centre (TRCRC).
