THE year was 1959 and being a British protectorate, the colony of British North Borneo (Sabah after independence through the formation of Malaysia in 1963) went to great lengths to give a warm welcome to the visiting Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, who passed away at age 99 last week in Britain.
Pic above shows one of the shops in Sandakan that was decorated with a huge mural of the prince. Businessman Willie Wong Chik Hing said the Municipal Council invited shops to decorate their premises to commemorate the visit.
