Yellow box needed at junction in Manggatal
The section of the main road near the road junction into Taman Syn Fah in Manggatal, that is deem crucial for a ‘yellow box’ to be provided.
MOTORISTS who intend to make a turnaround near Taman Syn Fah at Jalan Tuaran in Manggatal, are finding it hard to do so without the presence of a yellow box at the road junction there.

Yellow box is a traffic control measure designed to prevent gridlock in the event of a sluggish traffic flow on the road. Any drivers who are caught stationary inside this square box are risk being fined RM300 under the Road Transport Ordinance 1978 Section 119 (2)

MARK, who frequents the stretch every morning, told Hotline recently that so often motorists heading to the city would pay no heed to those wanting to make such turning even when the traffic flow was sluggish.

“While they are some who are kind enough to give way to us but there are those who stop right in the middle of the junction,” he told Hotline on March 30, who noticed a yellow box was not painted on the surface of the junction. He requested the relevant authority to paint the box on that section of the road soon as possible.

“It’ll be even better if they can apply thicker coating of the yellow paint so that it will last longer,” he added. Other than that, he also suggested a road sign bearing the word “Beri Laluan (give way)” to be set up in the vicinity of the road junction as well. “But all these efforts will be useless if nobody observe the traffic rules,” he added. He recalled many past occasions where he had waited almost 10 minutes to make such turning due to the selfishness and ignorance of several motorists.

“The congestion along this main road is especially bad during the morning’s peak hours from 6am to 8am.

“The situation is much worse during ‘pasar tamu’ in town where it often caused traffic snarl which it can stretched more than a-mile long,” he said. Hotline had submitted the request to the Public Works Department (PWD) in Kota Kinabalu recently.

“Allow us to verify the complaint first before commenting further on this matter,” its spokesman said.

Hotline will follow up on the case again later.
