Kota Kinabalu: A woman has lodged a police report on a court submission that described the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant as a show and display of “exotic cattle”.

Audrey Susan Tonggolou turned up Saturday at the Karamunsing police station this afternoon and claimed she had obtained the court submission via the Facebook page Orang Putih Kita.

Speaking to The Vibes, she said that as a Kadazan woman, she felt offended and appalled by the remarks.

“Whether it is used in court or not, it is completely irrelevant. The remarks seriously degrade the culture and tradition of the Kadazan Dusun ethnic group.

Branding the Unduk Ngadau competition as an “exotic cattle” show and an “extravagant pet show” of women as objects of desire indicates that the person who made the remarks has no respect for the culture and heritage of the Kadazandusun, she said.

She hopes the authorities will take the matter seriously and act on the party or parties making such remarks. She also urged the Kadazandusun people to condemn any degrading and demeaning statements regarding their culture.

A court submission calling the Unduk Ngadau women’s cultural pageant somewhat of an “exotic cattle show” and an “auction” has gone viral in Sabah.

Meanwhile, lawyer Marcel Jude, who is representing StarSabah politician Philip Among in his molest case involving an Unduk Ngadau contestant, has been urged to apologise to the Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) community for insulting a long tradition of Harvest Festival, the Unduk Ngadau competition.

KDM Malaysia Deputy President Datuk Juil Nuatim said Marcel must consider withdrawing his derogatory remarks on the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant which has angered many KDMs in Sabah.

He said he was very upset that the lawyer has branded Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan as “…but it is nothing more than an exotic cattle show and almost feel like an auction show” in his court submission.

“Sabahans, irrespective of their ethnic groups, cultures and faiths, are well-known in Malaysia to have mutual respects over each other tradition and religious festival celebrations, and yet, we have this lawyer who care less and disrespect our tradition Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan, deliberately, in his court submission while defending a politician in a molest case.

Juil, who is also Pantai Manis Assemblyman said the Unduk Ngadau Beauty Pageant was held as vital part of Harvest Festival to commemorate and respect a noble KadazanDusun woman known as Huminudon who sacrificed herself for the wellness and wellbeing of the KDM community.

He said the Unduk Ngadau competition is also a symbol to the sacrifice made by selfless Huminodun.

“In fact, it is a competition where the Unduk Ngadau contestants and finalists compete with each other to be selected as top three Unduk Ngadau while portraying uniqueness of their respective ethnic group and culture via their traditional attire and language.

“Furthermore, the contestants have their pride and dignity that are not for sale and we all should defend and protect them,” he said.

Juil added that the Unduk Ngadau competition also helps the State tourism industry by attracting tourists to come to Sabah and see and appreciate the distinctive celebration of Harvest Festival and beauty of Unduk Ngadau.
