City Hall to flush HSK Inanam sewage pipes
Fibregrade grills were put in place on roads in Taman Iramanis.
City Hall may have the sewage pipes servicing the HSK Industrial Centre in Inanam flushed in a bid to mitigate the recurring sewerage woes there.

Manholes on the roads around the shophouses, located off Mile 7 Jalan Tuaran, have been overflowed on and off since last year.

In each instance, the agency’s Engineering Department (ED) has stepped in to unclog the pipes, with congealed grease being cited as the root cause of the blockage.

An ED spokesman said these obstructions were most recently found inside the sewer line in the first week of June.

“Our contractor removed the blockages and has been checking on the manholes around the Centre, on and off, since then,” he said. “We suspect that activities in eateries at the Centre and commercial property next door may be contributing to this problem.” He said, if need be, City Hall would arrange to have a high-pressure jet of water pumped through these pipes to dislodge the more stubborn obstructions inside.

When asked if some fault at the sewage pump-house might account for the frequency with which manholes overflowed, the spokesman said this was not the case.

“The operations at this facility are monitored regularly and, so far, there have been no breakdowns.”

“Nevertheless, our contractor has been asked to step up efforts to clear the pipes.”

The previous metal grills in this Kolombong neighborhood went missing in early June

He said this would go some way to minimising the inconvenience caused to the public.

“We are working together with our colleagues from the Health and Environment Department (HED) to deal with the problems arising from the haphazard disposal of used cooking oil at kitchens in this area.”

A HED spokeswoman warned that eatery operators risked being slapped with a RM500 compound for failing to maintain the grease-traps in their kitchens.

She said such action could be taken in extreme cases under the agency’s by-laws.

“First time offenders face the possibility of having to settle a RM100 compound,” she said.

She said the Department’s inspectors would check on the condition of the kitchens, including the grease-traps, at food outlets there.

“The grease should be removed from the traps every day and not as and when it becomes necessary to do so.

Effluent was recently found to be overflowing from manholes around the property.

“If need be, notices to this affect will be issued to all the proprietors in the building instructing them to step up efforts to attend to the traps on their premises.”

The spokeswoman said the eatery-operators concerned would be given a grace period in which to do this,” he said.

“Should they fail to comply, then further action will be taken against them.”

IAN of Inanam said the tyres of his car had been soiled by the foul smelling fluids coming from the manholes around the Centre on several occasions.

“I have no choice but to leave my car in this space as many refuse to park in these areas when these structures overflow,” he said.

He bemoaned the added hassle of having to hose down the tyres of his car to get rid of the nuisance created by the stench.

“Given the traffic along the roads, where the manholes are located, I am sure that other road users would have also suffered a similar inconvenience.”

Ian hoped the local authorities would address these sewerage woes as soon as possible for the benefit of the public

Meanwile, City Hall will, from time to time, keep an eye on the condition of the grills covering the drains running beneath the housing roads in Taman Iramanis, Kolombong.

The spokesman said the drains, including the covers, were maintained as and when it became necessary to do so. “Rate-payers should also alert us directly of any irregularities involving these covers so that action can be taken to deal with these problems as soon as possible,” he said.

He was responding to a homeowner’s misgivings about the hazards posed by “holes” in some of stretches there, including Lorong Iramanis 6. The spokesman said an inspection was carried out earlier this month after City Hall became aware of the problem.

“Our staff noted that the grills on two roads in the neighbourhood were missing.

“One of our technicians returned with his workers, a few days later, to have new ‘fibregrade’ ones put in place.”
