Your water, your life
WATER is one of the five vital elements in Vasthu Sastra and it has powerful healing qualities (the other four are earth, air, fire and ether). It’s available to most of us simply at the turn of a tap, which is perhaps one reason why we don’t appreciate it enough. We tend to forget that over 70pc of our body is made up of water.   Research has revealed that a person can survive without food for quite a long time but only days or a week without water. Water regulates our body temperature, protects body organs, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells and moistens tissues in the eyes, improves brain function and flushes out waste from body and more. A lack of adequate amounts of water stresses our body because most organs will become less efficient and, eventually, disease will set in.

Its health benefits are many and among them are prevents constipation, improves physical performance, helps reduce weight, controls our mood, keeps skin healthy and bright and fights illnesses.

And when I say water, I mean water, not coffee, tea, fruit juices and other beverages.   As the basis of Vasthu Sastra is being in harmony with the elements, it recommends that a person drink enough water (according to his or her size) to remain in peace with this element. According to the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, general water intake (from all beverages and foods) that meet most people’s needs are about 16 cups of water each day for men and about 12 cups daily for women.

Children aged 12 and below should drink between five to eight cups of water.

The best way to get into the habit of drinking often throughout the day is to begin by drinking a minimum of one glass of water when you wake up – this will help cleanse the body.   What type of water? Nowadays, there are all types of bottled water, from mineral, distilled, purified and filtered to more exotic types like revitalised, energised and magnetised water. Whatever the type of bottled water you choose to drink, just make sure to consume an equal amount of plain water daily. Several readers have asked me about the usefulness of magnetised or energised water. Water that is passed through a magnetic field or that is energised by being placed inside a pyramid is said to become “powerful”. It is similar to water that has been energised by having mantras chanted over it. It is best to carry a bottle of water with you where you go so that you meet your hydration needs. It is recommended to drink a glass of water instead of ordering beverages.

Apart from the consumption of water, Vasthu Sastra also addresses other aspects of water. For instance, it advises that a leaky pipe should be remedied immediately as it is an indication that the breadwinner of the household is losing his or her wealth. As for positioning water features like fountains and swimming pools, Vasthu principles say they should be placed in the north-east quadrant of the property. And rainwater should flow towards the northern and eastern sides of the roof.   While we’re on the subject of unappreciated elements, let us discuss salt. Salt is another powerful agent that is affordable and easily available but that is not used to its full potential. Besides using it for cooking, placing a pinch of salt in the four compass directions of the house (north, south, east and west) helps to clear the space of any negative energy. It can also be used in the bedroom if occupants experience dullness or wake up with feelings of low self-esteem – salt purification can remove any “staleness” in the room’s energies.
