Hope for DPM from Sabah, S’wak
YAN: Newly-appointed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said his administration’s Cabinet line-up will be announced this week.

He said the list will be presented to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah first for His Majesty’s consent.

Touching on a suggestion that the Deputy Prime Minister be someone from Sabah or Sarawak, Ismail Sabri said he was willing to consider it.

Ismail Sabri said that his administration would not be a unity government that involved Opposition elected representatives.

“Cooperation with them (the Opposition) does not mean they will be in the Cabinet, but they can play their role by channeling their ideas through the Special Committee on Covid-19 and the National Recovery Council,” he told a media conference Monday. Also present was Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.

Earlier, accompanied by Muhammad Sanusi, the Prime Minister visited areas here that were affected by a massive mudflow from Gunung Jerai nearby. Ismail Sabri also invited opposition MPs to join forces with the Government on how to help solve the Covid-19 issue and heal the country’s economy which has been affected by the pandemic.

In his inaugural speech as Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri had offered room to opposition leaders to join the Special Committee on Covid-19 as well as the National Recovery Council.

He also addressed the various rumours circulating about the Cabinet line-up, and urged the public not to believe them as they were all false.

“Do not believe them, there are so many names being brought up...every day there’s a new list. But it is also good because it can help me see them,” he joked.

Ismail Sabri was sworn in as Malaysia’s ninth Prime Minister on Saturday (Aug 21). He succeeds Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who resigned from the post after losing majority support of the members of Parliament.

Earlier, the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) said a Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) II post should be created under the new federal administration to be filled by a Sarawakian MP from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

“SUPP is of the opinion that another post of Deputy Prime Minister II should be created and this Deputy Prime Minister II post shall be reserved for Sarawak and Sabah, as Sarawak and Sabah are indeed the remaining two equal partners in Malaysia.

“Both Sarawak and Sabah have contributed much to the nation building all these years, since 1963,” said SUPP Secretary Ggeneral Datuk Sebastian Ting.

Such an appointment would indeed be an open, sincere and genuine acknowledgement of the immense contributions from Sarawak and Sabah, he said, adding that as GPS has 18 MPs, it is therefore appropriate that the DPM II be filled by one of GPS MPs.

“We would like to propose Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof who was the Senior Minister and Minister of Works under the previous Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin and GPS Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi who was Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs for the proposed DPM II post,

“Both are highly experienced parliamentarians and had served as Minister and Deputy Minister for many years,” he said.

SUPP also proposed for the new Cabinet to be inclusive of other ethnicities in the country especially the Ibans, Bidayuhs, Orang Ulu, Kadazan-Dusun, Bajaus and others from Sarawak and Sabah.
