Kota Kinabalu: Over 2,000 prisoners in Kota Kinabalu have been vaccinated as part of Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) vaccination outreach programme which aims to assist the State Government’s target of achieving 80 per cent herd immunity by December 2021. Recently, UMS alongside the State Health Department and City Hall (DBKK) held a vaccination programme at the Kota Kinabalu Central Prison.

According to UMS Hospital (HUMS) Director Prof Dr Helen Benedict Lasimbang, 12 officers were deployed and led by HUMS Medical Officer Dr. Mohammad Hazamyn Hazrul Hamzah for the success of the mission.
“The five-day vaccination programme saw the CanSino vaccine being administered to some 2,118 prisoners.
“Apart from the Kota Kinabalu Central Prison, this vaccination programme was also held at the Women’s Prison Kota Kinabalu on Monday and the Kota Kinabalu Lockup on Tuesday.
“The programme will also be held at the Temporary Detention Centre from Sept. 15 to 17,” she said in a statement.

Helen added that another UMS team led by HUMS Medical Officer Dr Rishaini Elengovan had also administered the vaccine to residents in Kampung Sepakat Jaya, Sepanggar on Tuesday, involving some 200 residents.
“We will always be committed to assist the State Government’s efforts in making the vaccination mission a success.
