Kota Kinabalu: Australia plans to open its international border by Christmas at the latest, said its Tourism Minister Dan Tehan Wednesday, a move that is set to unwind one of the world's strictest lockdowns since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
Tehan said Australians will be able to travel abroad anywhere once the vaccination rate in their respective state reaches 80 per cent, Bloomberg reported.
ADVERTISEMENT "People will be able to freely travel outside Australia with no restrictions" under the national plan governing the country's emergence from Covid-19, Tehan was reported as saying by the news service.
Australians will still be subject to rules governing the countries they intend to visit.
The government is looking to establish travel bubbles with several countries to reduce quarantine time, Tehan further said.
Australia's borders have been mostly closed to non-citizens and non-residents since March 2020.
