Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is ready to allow travel bubbles again following the easing of rules for the fully vaccinated, said state tourism, culture and environment minister Jafry Ariffin.

He said the state had done this before and was confident it can be a success if everyone followed the standard operating procedures.

“With the implementation of the guidelines on travel bubbles, industry players can be prepared for the reopening of businesses while travellers can feel confident of a safe travel environment around Sabah,” Jafry said in a statement here today.

“We are moving towards the new normal of travelling and it is about time for our industry to be reactivated, starting with local travellers within Sabah.

“I must stress that if we wish to continue this advantage of travel and leisure, we must seriously abide by the SOPs as well.”

Jafry said the travel bubble concept would further allow local travellers to go beyond their districts.

It requires the travel agencies and hotels to obtain pre-approval from the state Covid-19 disaster management committee before conducting a tour or allowing the stay.

Guests must be transported from point to point, maintaining contactless travel, with pre-booked arrangements.

Employees of tour operators, hotels, resorts and homestays must be fully vaccinated.

All tourism sites in the state are now allowed to open to visitors from within the districts they are located in.

Currently, anyone residing in Sabah can start enjoying leisure travel within their districts as long as they are fully inoculated and have a low-risk status on their MySejahtera.

All tours and stays must be pre-booked through registered travel agencies and hotels. The respective travel agencies and hotels must also adhere to the latest SOPs enforced by the National Security Council.
