KOTA KINABALU: The marine resource survey ship Da Yang Hao has entered Malaysia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Saturday night, and is around 140 kilometres away off the coast of Labuan, Malaysiakini reported.

The presence of the vessel, owned by China’s Natural Resources Ministry, was first highlighted by a South China Sea observer on Twitter, @duandang.

Defence Security Asia reported that the data from a ship-tracking application showed that the Da Yang Hao research vessel was detected entering Malaysian continental shelf and EEZ while being escorted by a Chinese coast guard ship.

On Friday (Sept 24), the vessel was reportedly conducting research in the waters of the Vietnamese continental shelf before changing route abruptly towards Malaysian waters.

It was the same day that the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) conducted a bilateral exercise with the US Navy in the Straits of Melaka.
