PAPAR: The police are tracking seven male illegal immigrants – out of 14 - who escaped from the Papar Immigration Detention Centre, here, early Wednesday.

Papar District Police Chief DSP Batholomew Umpit said the group of 14 Filipino detainees, aged between 22 and 44, broke out of the detention centre at 3.30am.

“They were believed to have escaped through the toilet ceiling before cutting the grill fence.

“As of 10.45am today (Wednesday), seven of them have been apprehended at various locations within a two-kilometre radius of the detention centre.

“Seven others are still at large and we believe they are still within the district,” he told a media conference at IPD Papar, here, Wednesday.

The seven still at large.

Batholomew said the 14 detainees were placed at the middle block of the centre and the first arrest after the breakout was made at 5am.

He said the Immigration Department, the Air Operations Force, K9 tracking dogs and the Marine Police Force were assisting in the search operation.

“We urge the public to channel information that can lead to the apprehension of the remaining fugitives,” he said.

Batholomew said the case is being investigated under Section 223 of the Penal Code for escaping from detention and resisting lawful arrest.

Anyone with information can contact the Papar district police headquarters at 088-916064 or the nearest police station for immediate action, he added.
