Filipina sent to jail for prostitution

Kota Kinabalu: A 34-year-old Filipina was sentenced to one month jail on Wednesday for soliciting for prostitution.Manerridaa Nini Santos pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing the offence in a room at a hotel along Jalan Penampang, in Penampang at 9.45pm on Oct 25.

Manerridaa, who has no valid document, changed her plea to guilty to the charge when her case came up for pre-trial case management on Wednesday.
The charge under Section 372B of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine or both, on conviction.
Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuting, told the court that the police, acting on vice activity went to the said place and saw a woman, later identified as Manerridaa arriving and later entering a room inside the hotel.
The police knocked on the room door where a man opened it and Manerridaa was seen inside, said Kelvan, adding that upon inspection in the room, the police seized several items including money totalling RM600.

Further investigations revealed that Manerridaa had been engaged in prostitution activity since June this year until she was arrested.
Manerridaa was also found to have received a payment of RM200 for each time sex services were provided to a client, the court heard.

Unrepresented, Manerridaa, in between sobs, requested for the sentence to be run from the date of her arrest adding that she has two children.
Manerridaa also applied for the seized money to be returned to her as she wanted to buy soap.
Kelvan applied for an adequate sentence and for Manerridaa to be referred to the immigration department.
The court ordered her to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest and granted the prosecution’s application to refer Manerrida to the Immigration department.
The court also ordered the seized cash money to be forfeited.
