Kota Kinabalu: A bestselling book on the 1MDB financial scandal will be turned into a TV series, according to reports.

The "Billion Dollar Whale" book will be adapted into the TV series by "House of Cards" creator and showrunner Beau Willimon.

Westward producer Jordan Tappis has teamed up with Crazy Rich Asians co-financier Sk Global to develop the adaptation.

Tony award-winning playwright David Henry Hwang has been attached to write and executive-produce the series.

Sk Global and Westward will reportedly bankroll all stages of development and production.

The book, written by award-winning Wall Street Journal reporters Tom Wright and Bill Hope, gives an inside account of Malaysia's 1MDB shocking money laundering scandal, centering on the heist's alleged mastermind, the international Malaysian fugitive Jho Low and his Hollywood adventures.

The estimated $5 billion theft remains among the biggest fraud cases in history and remains under probe by Malaysian, Singaporean, Luxemburg, Swiss and US authorities.
