TAWAU: Seven men, including five locals, have been picked up over a riot at Taman Traulsen, Jalan Persisiran, here, after a video of the incident on Monday went viral on social media.Tawau District Police Chief ACP Peter Umbuas said the seven, aged between 23 and 38, were rounded up in separate arrests on Monday and Tuesday.ADVERTISEMENT
All of them were remanded until Nov 25 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code for investigations under Section 148 of the Penal Code.
Peter said they are looking for another individual identified as Jumadin Baba @ Jipun, 35, and urged those with knowledge of his whereabouts to come forward. The individual’s last address was at Kg Pasir Putih, Bukit Gemuk.
Those with information can contact Senior Investigating Officer ASP Zam Zarina Asri, (016-7375868) and Investigating Officer Inspector Navind Raj Ashokumar (014-3427025).
Peter said the fight involved two groups and the use of dangerous weapons. It was believed to have been triggered by a misunderstanding over a towed car.ADVERTISEMENT
He said police take the case seriously despite claims that both groups had since reconciled.
“This (reconciliation) has nothing to do with the police probe because this is an offence that concerns the people of Tawau, it makes it seem as though public order is not maintained,” he said.

He also asked the individual who recorded the 33-second video clip to come forward to help the investigations.
