State socio-econ panel to be set up: Joachim

Kota Kinabalu: A State-level Socio-Economic Working Committee will be set up to assist in examining issues faced by the State Government in various sectors.A meeting on its establishment was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam at the Sabah Economic Planning Unit office in the Menara Kinabalu, here, Wednesday.

The meeting discussed matters to be examined by the Committee namely issues/problems faced by the State Government regarding the economic sector, health, education, infrastructure, public administration/Borneonisation.
Also included are issues concerning public utilities such as water, electricity, communication and poverty rate issues.
In a statement, here, Thursday, Dr. Joachim who is also the State Minister of Industrial Development said the working committee that will be established is another channel to address the needs of the State Government in addition to the existing practice of doing things.
He said the working committee is to preserve the rights of the people in the socio-economic field, where members of the committee will identify problems faced by each ministry.

The Economic Planning Unit will be the Secretariat for the State-level Socio-Economic Working Committee Meeting.
“Matters or issues discussed in the State-level Socio-Economic Working Committee will be raised and presented in the Socio-Economic Working Committee Meeting of the Special Council on the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MKMA63) chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed.

“While matters or issues discussed at the Federal-level Socio-Economic Working Committee will be notified to MKMA63 chaired by the Prime Minister for appropriate action by the relevant parties.
“The Socio-Economic Working Committee is one of the three Working Committees established under MKMA63, apart from the Association Committee and the State Security Working Committee. All these working committees are to examine important matters and issues that are often raised related to the affairs of Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
Dr. Joachim also suggested calling on non -governmental organizations to participate in the meeting if necessary.
He advised all members of the meeting to submit proposals in the next meeting which involved a more detailed presentation.
Also present was the Director-General of the Public Service Department, Datuk Rosmadi Sulai and Sabah Economic Planning Unit Deputy Director (Macro); Robert Stidi, among others.
