Man jailed for stealing at work

Kota Kinabalu: A shop worker who stole RM360 from his workplace was on Thursday sentenced to four months’ jail and fined RM1,000 or one month jail.Shahrul Naim Masno, 24, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing the offence at 7.15pm on Oct 26 at the Pick N Pay, Lintas Plaza.ADVERTISEMENT
Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, told the court that Shahrul, who had just started working at the premises Oct 14, stole the money while he was on duty as a cashier on the said day.
Earlier, the supervisor found that the money in the cash box had decreased by RM360 and upon receiving CCTV footage, Shahrul was seen stealing the cash.
Shahrul was charged under Section 381 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine on conviction.
Duty Counsel Lim Ming Zoong, representing Shahrul, requested a lenient sentence saying that he has dependents namely his parents.ADVERTISEMENT
Lim said the reason Shahrul committed the offence was because he did not receive his salary on time and needed money for his family’s daily expenses. Kelvan applied for an adequate sentence.
In another case, two men were sentenced to 11 months’ jail each for being in possession of syabu.

Mohd Shafiz Harun admitted to having 0.08gm of syabu at 9.30pm on May 5, 2017 at Jalan Tuaran By Pass Manggatal.
He was ordered to serve the sentence from Thursday. Shan Abu pleaded guilty to having 0.02gm of syabu at 12.50pm on Sept 20 this year at a house at Kg Likas.
Both Shafiz and Shan were separately charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both on conviction.
