LABUAN: The Federal Government’s decision the move the country into the transition to endemic phase of Covid-19 on April 1 is a boon to the island’s listless business sector, Labuan National Security Council (NSC) director Mohd Hafiez Mohd Daud said.

“The federal government is aware of the dire situation faced by the people and the business community who had been ‘sailing through trouble waters’ during the pandemic.

“The people’s wellbeing were badly hit while businesses incurred losses and many opted to close business operations, as such, the transition to endemic phase is a boon to the people and businesses,” he said.

Mohd Hafiez said with the implementation of the transition to phase, businesses are set to rebound as business operating hours would return to normal.

“Labuan must go in line with the direction by removing restrictions on business operating hours to help businesses stay afloat again and revive business activities on this duty-free island.

“As NSC Labuan had witnessed the economic impact of Covid-19 on all types of businesses here, the time has come for Labuan to join forces in the transition to endemic so that we can allow people to return to near-normal life after battling the pandemic for two years,” he said.

Mohd Hafiez said it is timely to strike a balance between public health safety and economic survival. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, in a nationwide address on Tuesday, said Malaysia would enter the transition to endemic phase of Covid-19 on April 1, with business operating hours to run as stated in their licence, and prayer activities allowed without physical distancing.

“The transition to endemic phase, which is an exit strategy, is also a temporary phase before the country moves into the endemic phase, which can only be announced by the World Health Organisation,” he said.
