Kuala Lumpur: The meteorological department has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across 11 states today.

The department said bad weather was expected in most of the peninsula, as well as several locations in Sabah and Sarawak.

The warning, issued at 4.05pm today, said the bad weather was expected to last until 7pm, with the whole of Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, and Pahang to be hit by storms.

Some parts of Kedah (Kuala Muda, Sik, Baling, Kulim, Bandar Baharu), Terengganu (Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman), Selangor (Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Hulu Langat), Johor (Segamat, Mersing), Sarawak (Marudi, Limbang) and Sabah (Sipitang, Ranau, Telupid) will also be affected.

The department said that there were indicators of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm/hour over the next few hours.

Earlier, it was reported that about 300 houses in Kampung Cina and surrounding areas in Kuala Kedah were affected by flash floods due to high tide and heavy rain at about noon today.

A Kedah fire and rescue department spokesman said it received a call regarding the floods at 12.13pm but no temporary evacuation centre had been opened yet.

He told Bernama that all the affected victims have managed to move to safe areas and all roads were still passable for vehicles.
