SANDAKAN: It is time for Sabah to have its own emergency call system to ensure public safety, said Sabah PAS Deputy Commissioner Sahar Abdul Majid.

He strongly agreed that establishing Sabah’s own emergency call centre would reduce the bureaucracy of Sabahans’ emergency calls, which currently have to go through the MERS 999 Emergency Call Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, or Kuching before being connected to security units and related agencies in the State.

He was commenting on the issue that has been hotly debated by various parties, including politicians and the public, in the aftermath of an accident in Kolombong that resulted in the death of a baker named Lew Kok Fai, 54, whose medical team from the hospital was said to have arrived at the scene late.

According to Sahar, all parties should learn from the incident and work together to ensure Sabah has its own emergency call system so that relevant agencies can take prompt and proactive action to save people’s lives.
