Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC has recruited Portugal-born Jose Embalo to replace striker Neto Pessoa for the remainder of the season.

The 28-year-old Brazilian who joined the club in February had scored only two goals and the second was against Sri Pahang FC on June 18. Head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee said the decision for the change was to beef up their attacks.

“We decided to make a change during the transfer window to strengthen our attacks even though Neto managed to score a goal against Sri Pahang FC.

“We are not saying his performance has declined but we need to make sure that all the players, especially the imported players are good enough to play for Sabah FC,” he said on Friday.

He is confident that the newly-signed 29-year-old Guinea-Bissau international, who last played for Alashkert in the Armenian Premier League and had netted seven goals from 28 appearances since 2021, will be a hit in the Malaysian League.

“Jose has just started training with us and hopefully with his past experiences playing in many leagues in Europe will give him the edge to adapt quickly to the team.

“We have a few more days to monitor his condition before making any decision whether to play him in the coming away matches against Selangor FC and Negeri Sembilan FC,” he added.

Sabah FC are due to face Selangor FC next Tuesday (June 28) followed by the Negeri Sembilan tie on July 3.
