LABUAN: Labuan Corporation (LC) should now focus on efforts to improve infrastructure development and public facilities on this duty-free island. Its Chairman Senator Datuk Bashir Alias said it is high time to ensure the infrastructure and facilities are on par and meet the expectation of the people and investors.ADVERTISEMENT
“We must not let infrastructure development turn into an eyesore to the public and visitors, and tarnish the island’s image.
“Being a local authority and the lead agency on this island, we must be sensitive to the beauty of this island, and infrastructure and the facilities must not be allowed to be criticised and eventually become an issue,” he said when members of the Labuan Media Practitioner Association [Persatuan Penggiat Media Labuan] paid him a courtesy call at his office, Wednesday.
Bashir said Labuan must now focus on its tourism sector to project its image as a popular tourist destination with attractive tourism products.
“Tourism is a noticeable and growing sector, and it plays an important role in boosting the economy.ADVERTISEMENT
“An increase in tourism flow can bring positive economic outcomes to the island, through economic activities and employment opportunities,” Bashir said.
He also said the existing Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) should be turned into a full-fledged university with programmes related to maritime, shipping and oil and gas that are related to Labuan’s engine of economic growth.
