BEAUFORT: The Beaufort District Council has been urged to take action against shops selling spare parts which use the parking space in front of their shops to repair cars.

Former Beaufort District Officer Mohd Said Othman said such activity can dirty the surroundings as the shop operators would simply throw used oil into the drains or sewage, thus blocking them at times.

“Apart from polluting the sewage system, these makeshift workshops are also causing noise pollution,” he added.

He gave the example of such a shop near the cinema adjacent to Restoran Al-Madinah and also at Beaufort Jaya.

“They should follow the example of Pulai Manang which used to be near the old cinema but they have since moved to a new venue further away from the town centre.

“Apart from moving away from the busy town centre, this particular shop also takes care not to pollute the sewage,” he stated.

He said the Council should take stern action against those spare parts shops-turned light workshops which are uncooperative.

“Issue them compound notices or even cancel their licences if the warnings are not heeded,” he said, adding that the Council is empowered to do so.

He added that Council staff should conduct spot checks from time to time to catch these errant shopkeepers.

“Apart from the noise pollution, these shopkeepers are also denying other road users from parking their cars there as they normally ‘book’ or block the parking in front of their shops.
