Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Malaysian Broadcasting Department (RTM Sabah) has made great strides of progress since its inception 70 years ago.

RTM Sabah was first known as Radio Sabah in 1952, but was officially launched in 1955.  It later changed its name to Radio Malaysia Sabah after the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963. RTM Sabah operates under the auspices of the Malaysian Broadcasting Department. In line with national policies, strategies and development, RTM Sabah continues to work to promote national integration.

Based on these factors, several local stations, namely SANDAKANfm were established in 1986, then TAWAUfm in 1987, and KENINGAUfm in 2009.

At the age of 70, RTM Sabah has achieved various advances and reforms.

Radio Malaysia Sabah was rebranded on June 11, 2005 – Malay radio broadcasts were rebranded into SABAHfm, while multilingual radio broadcasts became SABAHVfm. RTM Sabah is supported by two main divisions, namely the Planning Division and the Engineering Division.

These divisions are assisted by the Management Services Branch as well as the Marketing, Promotion and Advertising Regulatory Unit. The Programmes Division, which includes the Radio Section, TV Section, Current Affairs News Section as well as Entertainment and Music Section, are the pillars of the department’s strength. For TV broadcasting, RTM Sabah has published various shows, such as ‘Kami Bah Ini’, ‘Olumis OK’, ‘Rona Sabah’ and ‘VERSUS’ which are broadcast on TV1 and TV Okey.

In addition, RTM Sabah’s TV production unit conducts live broadcasts of important events or special programmes in conjunction with festivities, while also providing material for TV1’s ‘Selamat Pagi Malaysia’ segment.

The Current Affairs News Section, RTM Sabah is also committed to help spread the mission and vision of the State Government through news coverage of programs implemented, including in rural areas.

For RTM Sabah’s five radio stations, namely SABAHVfm, TAWAUfm, SANDAKANfm and KENINGAUfm, it acts as a medium that disseminates the government’s policies and programmes to residents, in both urban and rural areas. The effort signifies RTM Sabah’s consistent effort to establish close cooperation with the State Government in helping to convey information on its development agendas to the people.
