Jail, fine for threatening to hurt mum

John pleaded guilty to committing the crime against Kalsom Baih, 68, at 4.30pm on Aug 13 in a room of a house at the Telipok Settlement Scheme, Manggatal.
Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man, who threatened to injure his mother with a knife, was jailed 15 months and fined RM4,000 or another 12 months.

John, 46, changed his plea to guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun when his case came up for case management.

John pleaded guilty to committing the crime against Kalsom Baih, 68, at 4.30pm on Aug 13 in a room of a house at the Telipok Settlement Scheme, Manggatal.

He had on Aug 17 claimed trial to the charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.

The court was informed by the prosecution that prior to the incident, Kalsom  was sleeping in her room when John, who was naked, entered the room holding a  knife.

The mother woke up and stood near the cupboard as she was scared and worried.

She tried persuading John by saying that she would give him RM20 and a mobile phone charger.

The victim’s other children then rushed and helped their mother, the court heard.

According to the victim, the incident was not the first and that she had been beaten by John if he was not given money.

The court also heard that John often asked his mother for money to buy syabu and glue.

In another case, a 29-year-old dispatch man was fined RM4,500 or 12 months jail for disposing of stolen properties.

Jainol Md Johan pleaded guilty to hiding five units of stolen television and a stolen stand fan belonging to Eignterep Sdn Bhd at 9.30pm on Aug 2 in a house at Kg Tatahan, Jalan Kionsom, Inanam.

The charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.

Unrepresented, Jainol requested leniency. Inspector Albert Basiri prosecuted.
