SHARJAH: The key to being successful on social media platforms is to have content that is both interesting and useful, according to Dana Shaban, an entrepreneur and social media expert.

“Content is king,” she said, while stressing that the messages on digital platforms should be clear and simple.

“The key to success is to post content that is both interesting and useful,” she told young people who wanted to become influencers at the 41st Sharjah International Book Fair in a session called ‘Writing on social media’.

“Content should have a point and help with something. The person who wants to be an influencer needs to make it clear in the first 10 to 15 seconds what the point of the video is. If they don’t, the viewer will lose interest and move on to the next video.

“Instead of just using captions or stock photos and videos, the person should appear in front of the camera to build his presence and credibility,” she said, adding that people tend to watch videos more than pictures and text-based content on social media platforms.

Shaban told influencers, “Even if you’re facing the camera in your video, you should always add captions to get more people to feel compelled to listen and watch the video.”

She said that with every piece of content posted, the person who made it should ask viewers to do something, which would help get them more involved.

She also told people to pay attention to YouTube Shorts, which will start making money early next year and let people make money from their social media content.

Initially launched in India on Sept 14, 2020, and rolled out across the US on March 18, 2021, YouTube Shorts quickly surpassed 6.5 billion daily views globally. Shorts was finally released in beta-mode to 100 countries worldwide on July 12, 2021.
