SANDAKAN: A foreigner was apprehended within 48 hours after he was suspected of robbing and raping a woman in her 20s here.

Sandakan District Police Chief ACP Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek said the man in his 30s, who has previous criminal convictions, was arrested on Sept 29, and police recovered from him stolen items believed to belong to the victim.

“The man who tested positive for methamphetamine is believed to have also robbed the victim of her laptop on Sept 27.

“A knife believed used to commit the crime was also seized from the suspect,” he told a media conference at the Sandakan Police Station, Thursday.

The suspect was charged at the Session Court on Oct 12 for five offences - armed robbery, rape, obstructing police, drugs and dangerous weapon.

On another development, Abdul Malek said police crippled two groups – Geng Sultan and Geng Kancil - believed responsible for housebreaking, breaking into shops and restaurants and stealing vehicles around the district.

He said six members of the group, comprising two locals and four foreigners, aged 28 and 32, were nabbed.

“All six men tested positive for methamphetamine,” he said, adding 20 items, including gold bracelets, handphones, televisions, speakers, cooking gas cylinders, donation boxes and car keys, were seized.

“With the arrests, police believe they have solved 37 cases,” said Abdul Fuad.

The total amount of loss for the 37 cases is estimated to be worth RM59,000, while the confiscated property is estimated to be worth RM20,000.

For the record, the Sandakan Criminal Investigation Department has solved a total of 376 out of 436 criminal cases recorded in the district between Jan 1 and Oct 11, this year.

Abdul Fuad attributed the success to cooperation from members of the public in providing correct information which led to the arrest of the culprits.
