Stop using religious, racial sentiments in Parliament debates: Bung
Bung Moktar said labelling others “kafir (infidel) should be avoided and that MPs should engage in debates without hurting the feelings of others.
Kota Kinabalu: Using religious and racial sentiments in Dewan Rakyat debates should stop, said Kinabatangan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Panglima Bung Moktar Radin.

He said some MPs from government and opposition resort to such antics.

“We are being watched and observed by Malaysians and the world. We should set an example for everyone…remember the 222 MPs represent 36 million Malaysians.

“It can disrupt the harmony of our diverse communities,” he said, when debating the national 2024 budget.

Bung Moktar said labelling others “kafir (infidel) should be avoided and that MPs should engage in debates without hurting the feelings of others.

“In the case of Islam, my knowledge may be limited, but even in the Quran, it is mentioned in Surah Al-Kafirun, ‘For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.

As devout Muslims, we are encouraged to respect the beliefs of others. We should refrain from discussions that can divide our communities.”

The Umno Sabah liaison chief added it has been 66 years since independence, living in a democratic country, free to go anywhere and free to practise our own religious teachings.

“Have we not learned from the tragedy of May 13.,1969, the racial riots that should have taught us the meaning of unity and should serve as a lesson to prevent our nation from falling into chaos and destruction due to disputes among our own people?” Bung asked.

“That is why after the 15th General Election, we formed a Unity Government, as directed by the Agong with the hope that the concept of unity in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation can be brought together to build our beloved nation.”
