Ngeh’s apology an old DAP tactic, says Wan Saiful

Wan Saiful Wan Jan called for the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to take action against DAP’s Ngeh Koo Ham.
PETALING JAYA: The apology by DAP MP Ngeh Koo Ham over a proposal to include non-Muslim constitutional experts on a committee studying the conflicts between shariah law and the Federal Constitution, is nothing but an “old DAP tactic”, says Wan Saiful Wan Jan.
The Bangi Bersatu chief said it has become the norm for DAP to make divisive and disrespectful statements that jeopardise national unity, “only to casually retract or apologise later”.

“We reject Ngeh’s apology, purportedly withdrawing his proposal. We also reject the excuses given by DAP on this matter,” Wan Saiful said in a statement.
On Dec 30, Ngeh apologised over his proposal, saying that he only made the suggestion to ensure all views were considered before any constitutional amendments were made.
The Beruas MP said he was also unaware that the special committee had actually been formed by the National Council for Islamic Affairs (MKI) that is chaired by the Sultan of Selangor.
In response to Ngeh’s proposal, Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah issued a reminder to non-Muslims to respect and refrain from interfering in matters relating to Islamic affairs.

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook had sought to play down the controversy stemming from Ngeh’s proposal, insisting that the party was not trying to interfere in Islamic affairs.
He also said non-Muslims need not be concerned about the composition of the committee as any legal amendment involving the rights of non-Muslims must be scrutinised and decided by the Cabinet before following the “usual parliamentary process”.

Wan Saiful condemned the “nonchalant attitude” shown by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government for not taking any serious action against Ngeh and his party.
The former Bersatu information chief added that the police as well as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) must investigate and take action against DAP MPs who deliberately touch on race, religion and royalty (3R) issues.
