BERLIN: State Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew, hailed news of potential additional charter flights from China to Tawau beginning next month.

She said Batik Air has confirmed charter flights for one year from China to Tawau from three cities.

According to Liew, there will be three weekly flights from Pudong commencing in April, and likewise, from Chengdu starting in July.

As for Shenzhen, there will be three charter flights to Tawau in the month of June.

“We anticipate a tourism boom in Tawau.

“It will be an eye-opening experience for first-time visitors as they soak in our natural beauty and other unique attractions.

“I wish them a pleasant and enjoyable holiday in Sabah,” she said.

Liew gave credit to the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) team for its continuous effort in promoting Sabah to new destinations abroad.

In January this year, Tawau received its inaugural international flight by Firefly Airlines, connecting Nanjing, China, to this east coast town.

Meanwhile, Liew hosted dinner for the Malaysian Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Datin Paduka Dr Adina Kamarudin, and Tourism Malaysia Frankfurt Office as a prelude to ITB Berlin 2024 at a leading restaurant.

Present were the Director of Tourism Malaysia Frankfurt Office Robinder Kaur and Deputy Director Aswad Aziz.

Liew is leading a delegation from the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) to attend ITB Berlin 2024, the world’s largest tourism trade show set to take place from March 5 to 7 on Berlin exhibition grounds.

Dr Adina, who was accompanied by spouse, Mahzan Abdul Samad, welcomed the Sabah delegation, comprising Assistant Minister cum STB Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry Josie Lai Mei Sing, Chairman of Sri Pelancongan Sabah Ken Pan Ying On, and STB Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jeffery Jimit, among others.

Liew expressed optimism that ITB Berlin 2024 would lure more European tourists to Sabah.
