Kota Kinabalu: Poon Jia Hao and Charlayne Chong Shin Ling emerged champions in the 34th SGCC Amateur Open Championship 2024  at Sabah Golf & Country Club on Sunday.

Jia Hao from Kuala Lumpur won the men’s gross title for the first time after he posted a three-day total of 229 (72, 79, 78). In second place and two shots behind was Akbar Said (231 – 75, 77, 79) and third place went to Zia Iqmal Abdul Said (232 – 80, 78, 74).

Local lass Charlayne had an easier win as she clinched the ladies gross title with her total score of 231 (74, 79, 78), a massive winning margin over defending champion Nabilah Alifuddin (250 – 86, 81, 83), who was 19 shots adrift, while further behind in third place was Putri Haryaty Najwa Harezam (262 – 88, 86, 88).

In the nett event, the men’s title went to Ryan Lam Tse Zhiang (140) followed by Dylan Zayden Darious (143) and Sajer Rechaldo (145).

The top three ladies nett winners were Shannon Sim Xuan (146), Dynneva Joyce Donni (149) and Jack Hazlyne Zim (150).

Alfred Wong Fu Vui with 37 points came top in the President Invitees event based on stableford system 36 and in second place was Yong Teck Chong (36) with Roeshan Morthi (36ocb) coming in third.

As for the novelty prizes, the Bull’s Eye winners on day one were Aswandi Hj Paun, Rusdie Mahali, Leduan Jordan Mobijohn, Tambrin Latoba and Sajer Rechaldo, while the second day winners were Eric Tsang Yuk Chuen, Ixora Voon Kae Jiun, Jackson Gamalid and Lee Kah Ching.

Meanwhile, the first day winner of the nearest to the pin on hole 8 was Aswandi Hj Paun and day two winner on nearest to pin hole 17 was Lee Kah Ching.

More than 160 golfers took part in the three-day tournament and the main prizes were presented by Sabah Golf and Country Club president Andrew Yap Kim Phin.

Also present were Sabah Golf Association president Nash Hon, tournament director Ng Loong Fah and other officials.
