Anwar announces wage hike over 13% for civil servants
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the increment would be the highest ever given to civil servants.
PUTRAJAYA: The government will increase the remuneration of civil servants by more than 13% this year, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the increment would be the highest ever given to civil servants.

“The highest ever increase previously was 13% and this year I will announce an increment that is higher than that.

“We will implement the wage increase from Dec 1 this year as I have promised,” Anwar said when officiating Labour Day celebrations at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

He said the total income for civil servants, including allowances, would thus increase to a minimum of RM2,000 per month from the current RM1,795 per month.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the government has allocated more than RM10 billion for the salary adjustment, which is applicable to all civil servants.

“(Civil servants) will be monitored (to see if) they are lazy. If their work record is unsatisfactory, they will not be given the reward,” he said.

Anwar also urged the private sector to follow the government in providing increments to employees.

“Some private companies make plenty of profits but where do the profits come from? From (the workers’) productivity.

“Give a little (to the workers). If the company makes hundreds of millions in profit, give a few hundred to the workers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the Sabah and Sarawak governments had agreed to amend their states’ labour ordinances to be standardised with the Employment Act 1955 used in the peninsula.

He said the amendments would be tabled at the next Parliament sitting.
