Cuepacs president Adnan Mat also lauded the government for its commitment to restructuring civil servants’ remuneration.
PUTRAJAYA: The government must consider increasing pensions to a level that is commensurate with the increase in civil servants’ wages from this year, says Cuepacs.
Its president Adnan Mat said he hoped the government could do this as pensioners are struggling with the hike in the cost of living.

“Cuepacs hopes the government will consider (increasing the pension) generously for those that qualify.
“We just hope for some fair consideration,” Adnan told the press after the Labour Day celebrations at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
Earlier today, Anwar announced that the government will increase civil servants’ remuneration by more than 13%, beginning from December this year. He said the increment would be the highest ever given to civil servants.
In January, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said new hires in the civil service would no longer get pensions, after public services director-general Wan Ahmad Dahlan said the government would implement a contract appointment system for new recruits in the civil sector.

Zahid said civil servants would instead contribute to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Social Security Organisation (Socso), adding that the shift was part of a broader initiative to phase out traditional pensions.
He said reducing pension payments would alleviate the government’s financial burden.

At present, civil servants are allowed to choose between the pension scheme or making a contribution to the EPF.
Meanwhile, Adnan also lauded the government for its commitment to restructuring civil servants’ remuneration, saying Anwar’s bravery and firmness helped as previous governments had not done enough to tackle the issue.
“The effort and commitment represent the government’s appreciation for approximately 1.6 million civil servants who work to give the country a solid foundation,” he said.
