Sabah grid infra ready for Sarawak connection
Madius said Sabah Electricity has already completed its grid infrastructure ready for connection to Sarawak.
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Chairman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau hopes the Prime Minister’s proposal on Sarawak exporting electricity to the Southern Philippines via Sabah will be the catalyst to expedite the crucial grid connection between both Bornean states.

“This initiative presents not only a valuable business opportunity for Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and benefits our neighbouring country but will also expedite the grid link,” said Madius in a statement, here, Thursday.

“A power purchase agreement between both regions has been signed, initially starting with 30MW capacity and scheduled to increase to 50MW within five years.

“We aim to further expand this capacity to 100MW as Sarawak’s supply capability grows. However, this power exchange requires the completion of the inter-regional grid connection,” he said.

He said the successful collaboration between Sabah and Sarawak will play a vital role in enhancing power capacity and stability in this region.

“The export of energy from Sarawak to the Philippines would be more effective with the swift completion of the Southern Link Project. “This project encompasses the construction of a 330km transmission line from Sipitang to Tenom, extending to Kalabakan and Tawau, complementing the existing transmission infrastructure.

“This strategic development will significantly strengthen Sabah’s power supply stability while reinforcing the regional energy network,” he said.

Madius said as neighbouring regions, Sabah and Sarawak share a relationship akin to siblings, maintaining strong cooperation across various sectors, including energy.

“This latest initiative will undoubtedly strengthen the partnership between both regions, bringing mutual benefits to all parties involved. “We extend our sincere appreciation to the Prime Minister for his vision and support in this endeavour. “We also thank Abang Johari for this initiative. Through this integrated cooperation, we can build a more prosperous future for all,” he said.
