DAILY EXPRESS (Jan 1, 1982) - KOTA KINABALU, Wed. - A Joint Chamber Council is to be established by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Malaysia (ACCCIM) and the Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Malaysia, to promote better understanding between the two communities.
In a new year message, the president of ACCCIM, Datuk Wee Boon Ping said that the move would also enable the two chambers to look into opportunities and identify areas for joint-ventures between the Malay and Chinese business communities.
In describing the joint chamber council as a ‘new chapter in economic co-operation between the two major communities, Datuk Wee felt the realisation of this objective would be a testimony to the fact that spurious argument over the macro-economic targets of the New Economic Policy would not help to solve anything.
“Only positive action and concerted efforts can bring about the desired progress of both communities. Therefore let us resolve to adopt a more positive and rational approach in tackling the problems and issues of our community,” he stressed.

The ACCCIM President also hoped that Malaysian Chinese political and community leaders would share a common vision that intra-racial unity would not be side-tracked in forging ahead for national unity, as positive contributions could only be brought about by an integrated community.
Datuk Wee added that the ACCCIM supported the Prime Minister’s commitment to the implementation of the New Economy Policy and the fulfilment of the Fourth Malaysia Plan targets.
Under the projected an integral part of the private sector, should respond to this call and act positively in meeting national development targets.

Datuk Wee described 1981 as a year of great significance in view of the launching of the Fourth Malaysia Plan and felt the ultimate realisation of the plan as a whole, would result in a new milestone in the socio-economic development of the country.
He was of the opinion that the smooth handing over of leadership by Tun Hussein Onn to Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad reflected the political stability inherent in Malaysia and the whole hearted support of the new Prime Minister by the various communities.
