Sandakan lass accepts man-sized job at shipyard

DAILY EXPRESS (October 2, 1981) - A Sandakan girl has broken into a man’s world by qualifying for and accepting a man-sized job.

She is supervising civil engineer at the Sabah Shipyard.

Miss Siew Kam Lian (picture) who qualified as a civil engineer from the University of Salford, United Kingdom, last year and began work in January this year with the shipyard.

She is a site supervisor for the shipyard’s huge building hall which has mostly a steel structure.

Miss Siew said she was one of the only two girls who was studying civil engineering at the university and her classmate gave up after two years.

“However, I loved engineering and qualified as an engineer.

“I have full confidence and my colleagues have accepted me without any reservations,” she said.
