Sandakan leads in both exports and imports

NORTH BORNEO NEWS & SABAH TIMES (June 11, 1963) - JESSELTON June - Trade for the first quarter of the current year shows an unfavourable balance of $17,928,630 - an increase of approximately three times over last year’s figures of $599,307.

For the month of April, 1953, Sandakan continued to lead in both the import ( $8,014,9 20) and export ($4,148,526) trades; Jesselton a distant second with imports ($6,856,214) and exports ($2,753,357); Tawau third with imports ($4,120,460) and exports ($3,586,511); Labuan fourth with imports ($2,493,286) and exports ($2,156,0 19); Semporna fifth with imports ($897, 761) and exports ($1,251,, 117), and Kudat sixth with imports ($412,464) and exports ($357,986), and Lahad Datu seventh with imports ($408,634) and exports ($629,759).

In Sandakan the value of imports for April exceeded that of exports by almost 100pc while that for Jesselton by about 300pc. 

Only in Bakapit, Semporna, Lahad Datu and Weston did exports show favourably. 

Cumulative import figures for January-April this year also showed that while imports kept increasing steadily in Jesselton from $19,448,009 for the same period last year to $25, 673,403 this year, and Sandakan from $24,140,600 in 1962 to $27,627,881 this year (value of exports for the same cumulative period has not increased correspondingly. 

In Jesselton cumulative export figures for the same period last year were $9,719,805:- it was $10,324,978 this year showing a small increase. 

In Sandakan cumulative exports figure for the same period last year were $21,381,7 17 and $20,407,775 this year, showing a decline. 

Elsewhere, as in Bakapit, Tawau, Semporna and Kudat, cumulative figures for the corresponding periods maintained a steady level, except for Weston which showed a marked increase over the period that is from $783,674, last year to $1,280,099 for the current quarter. 

Timber, the principal export commodity was 59,137 tons (50 Cubic ft.) valued at $5,304,180 for the month of April, 1963, representing a considerable decrease as compared to last month’s figures which were 100,802 tons valued at $8,805,389. 

Rubber was 1,873 tons valued at $2,902,532 as compared with 1,665 tons valued at $2,620,310, representing an appreciable increase over the March figures. 

Copra was 2,318 tons valued at $866,052, showing a slight decline as compared with March figures of 2,536 tons valued at $1,063,191. 

Hemp was 392 tons valued at 402.095, showing a slight increase over figures for March. 

Cocoa beans showed very considerable increase having risen from 31,360 lbs valued at $19,000 in March to 73,085 lbs. valued at $45,727 for April. 

Cumulative figures for January-April 1963 and 1962 for timber and rubber remained constant, but copra had dwindled from 18,073 tons valued at $7,302,273 in 1962 to 9,413 tons valued at $3,923,127 In 1963 - a drop of 100pc approximately.
