Crude oil production starts in Sabah

DE (Wednesday, Oct 2, 1974) - KOTA KINABALU, Tues. - Crude oil production in Sabah has began. The State Government announced today that Esso Exploration Malaysia, Inc. has commenced production from its Tembungo Platform, 42 miles off the coast of Sabah in waters approximately 275 feet deep.
A statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Department said the successful well is the first platform production well drilled by Esso Exploration.
It was drilled to a depth in the 5,500 foot range. The statement said although initial production is small, it is expected that additional development wells will be drilled from the same platform.
Esso Exploration Malaysia. Inc. is continuing exploration operations both off the coast of Sabah and the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The production of crude oil in Sabah is yet another step in the development of Malaysia’s petroleum resources, the statement said.
