Datuk George Ginibun, deputy Speaker of State Legislative Assembly, who officiated the Penampang District Council Pesta Kaamatan last Friday, left some serious food for thought to the Penampang folks.

“Looking at Penampang and Donggongon towns, when someone overseas reads articles and literature about Penampang, the Kadazan village… do they see any Kadazan here, anything different from other districts? ” Ginibun asked.

“Is Penampang different from KK, for that matter?

“For me, I don’t see any difference. The only difference is the Sigar, wow, big Sigar. What does it mean? Sigar is the headgear of the Kadazan people but we don’t see them using it everyday isn’t it?

“Even during festive season like Kaamatan, not everybody uses the Sigar because it is very expensive but that is our culture,” Ginibun observed.

Hope for big effort to make a difference in Penampang

Ginibun said the change of government should make a difference in Penampang.

“It’s already one year… we look at Penampang, we are still the same, not so much difference from the previous government,” he asserted.

“But, hopefully, some big project will happen in Penampang before the next election. We hope and we are trying our best to invite investors overseas, especially China to invest in the town.”

Put trade schools in Penampang not more jobless grads

He said a matter of concern is the large number of university graduates in Penampang who had no jobs.

“We hope the government will introduce trade schools in Penampang because technicians or semi-skilled people I don’t see them jobless.”

He added: “A lot of people want skills such as electricians, mechanics and if you are skilful and have a certificate of this nature you can definitely find a job. But here in Penampang, there are hundreds of university graduates who have no job!”

The way out?

“Maybe another way of thinking is we better produce semi-skilled workers who are wanted in this country and their income is not bad,” Ginibun suggested.

Do something

“We hope the government will do something for Penampang because there are thousands of our brothers and sisters in Kuala Lumpur. Why? Because there are no jobs available here.”

He said the Kaamatan reminded him of the poor and unfortunate.

“Poverty is one of the big problems in Malaysia, particularly in Sabah,” Ginibun claimed.

“The government must ensure that poverty is reduced to a minimum level. Unfortunately, Sabah is one of the poorest states in Malaysia.

“But looking at it, we are not poor. We have everything. What the Peninsula has, we have, what Singapore does not have we have. Yet, they are richer than us so this is the problem here in Sabah.

“I hope that this government can solve the problem as soon as possible,” said Ginibun who then declared the Kaamatan open.
